George IV Obverse and Reverses & Varieties

George IV (1820-1830)

George IV Obverse 1

Legend reads:

GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA

(George IV, by the Grace of God)

The date appears between 2 oval beaded ornaments

157 border teeth

*******************************************************************************

Unrecorded sub-variety of Obverse A – 6 over 1

Note: The date figure 6 is thought to have been struck over a 1. The base of the 1 can be seen at the bottom left of the 6. This obverse has been found paired with reverses A, B and C.

George IV Reverse A

Legend reads:

BRITANNIAR: REX FID: DEF:

BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR

(King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith)

156 border teeth

This reverse was used from 1825 to 1827

*********************************************************************************

Sub-variety of Reverse A – extra line

Note: extra line to left of saltire in bottom left quadrant (this has been found on coins dated 1825)

**********************************************************************************

 George IV Reverse B

Similar to Reverse A except that there is a thin raised line along the arms of the saltire

This reverse is found on some circulation and proof coins of 1826

***************************************************************************************

George IV Reverse C

Similar to Reverse A except that there is a thick raised line along the arms of the saltire

This reverse is found on some circulation and proof coins of 1826

**************************************************************************************

Sub-variety of Reverse C – wavy line

wavy line                                           normal

Note: the thick lines in the saltire are off line (\) and the sandal strap appears thinner

The Lion’s face on Britannia’s bodice

Michael Gouby has drawn my attention to the fact that the chain mail bodice or breastplate on Britannia’s upper body has what clearly appears to be a lion’s face medallion at the bottom, continuing the long association of Britannia with a male lion. This is really only properly visible on well-struck, near uncirculated specimens, see below:
