Victoria Early Beaded Border Patterns and Proofs

The early beaded border patterns and proofs struck in 1860 are illustrated here for information and to aid identification of these coins. The coins are listed in their Freeman number order according to the original 1970 edition of “The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain.

F758 Bronzed Pattern

The following varieties should probably not be recorded as official “patterns” because each obverse and reverse design was actually used in the production of coins intended for currency.

F759 (Gouby A+a1) Bronzed Copper struck on a heavy flan

F760 Bronzed “pattern” (Gouby A+a)

 F763 (Gouby A or A1 +b) Bronze “Pattern”

Note: Freeman numbers 764 to 766 in his original edition of “The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain” were reclassified in the 1985 updated edition to reflect the probability that these die pairings were intended for circulation.

F764 (Gouby B+a) Bronze “Pattern” – reclassified as F8A

Note: I have never seen a photograph of a genuine F8A

      ************************************************************************************************

F765 (Gouby B+b) Bronzed Proof – reclassified as F8C

Note: in Freeman’s original 1985 book, this variety was described as a bronzed Pattern rather than a proof but in the 1970 version, it was reclassified as Bronze Proof, Bronzed finish.

 F766 (Gouby B+b) Bronze “Pattern” – reclassified as F8B
